I was born and raised in Rochester, NY with true Southern roots since my parents are natives of South Carolina and Georgia. Both of my parents were born into, and raised in sharecropper families, so they instilled a strong work ethic into my brother’s and me while growing up. Yearly summer vacations to the South where my parents were raised, and hearing the stories of their humble farming beginnings, helped me to understand where and who I came from. I am a devout believer …

LaTeka Kegler- Taylor, M.A., CCC- SLP

I was born and raised in Rochester, NY with true Southern roots since my parents are natives of South Carolina and Georgia. Both of my parents were born into, and raised in sharecropper families, so they instilled a strong work ethic into my brother’s and me while growing up. Yearly summer vacations to the South where my parents were raised, and hearing the stories of their humble farming beginnings, helped me to understand where and who I came from. I am a devout believer of Maya Angelou’s quote, “If you don’t know where you’ve come from, you don’t know where you’re going…..”

I attended undergraduate school at Johnson C. Smith University, where I reigned as Miss Johnson C. Smith University 2001-2002. I was featured in the April 2022 issue of Ebony Magazine, along with other HBCU College Queens. I obtained a B.A. in Communication Arts from JCSU, then worked as an Account Executive in television sales with WJZY/ UPN in Charlotte, NC. From there, I worked as a Pharmaceutical Sales Rep with Merck & Co., and a Sales Rep for the Nielsen TV Ratings.

After deciding to change gears with my career, I took a position as a full- time substitute teacher with the  Williamsburg County Schools. It was there that I realized that Speech Therapy was my calling! I enrolled in the full- time, 3- year long Master’s Speech Pathology program at SC State University. I completed the program in 2012, then began my new career as an SLP in the Skilled nursing, Rehab, AL & IL facility where I discovered my love for dysphagia and swallowing disorders.

Out of this love, SpeakEasy Therapy Factory was birthed in 2015, to serve adults and children with speech-language, feeding and swallowing disorders in a private practice setting. SpeakEasy later added Physical Therapy services, and has plans to add Occupational Therapy services in the near future!! We have an amazing team of therapists who are just as passionate about therapy as I am! I praise God for leading me to my calling because the field of Speech therapy never feels like “work” to me!!!!

I am a proud wife, daughter, sister and mother. When I am not working, I enjoy shopping, traveling, watching You- Tube travel vlogs with my husband, listening to audio books, singing, dancing, and anything having to do with fashion, performing and the arts!!

April Newsome

Hi Everyone, My name is April and I was born and raised here in lovely South Carolina. Coming from a very small rural area, I find that the hustle and bustle of The Midlands is just right for me. Not too crazy, not too loud. I long to have a small little farm just on the outskirts but still pop into town for fun and culture.

I spent most of my college years bouncing from college to college and degree to degree. Ultimately, after wearing many hats in the workforce I found my place in Business Management with a concentration on Healthcare Systems. I love the attention to detail that is required, the level of customer care that is needed and being able to adapt to the many changes in the healthcare fields is what drives me to do my best work. I have worked in pediatric therapy for 8 years and it truly makes me feel as if I’m a part of shaping a better future for all involved.

When I’m not behind my desk ensuring things are working smoothly, I can be found either in my kitchen cooking up a storm or cuddled up with my dog (Walter) and cat (Pia) binge watching true crime shows.

We have three children, our oldest is our daughter Valery, who recently got married to my son-in-law Ben. Then we have identical twin boys that are currently in high school. We have been truly blessed with our family.

I have been working in the medical field for 21 years working different roles with many different specialist including over 6 years of outpatient therapy services for children and adults.  I did attend Midlands Technical College and completed their CNA program. I am planning on returning back to school in the summer of 2024 to get my Bachelor’s Degree in Science with Medical Mangement.

My ideal vacation would be somewhere warm, but not to hot, with a breeze either coming off the mountain side or the ocean, quiet area, no schedule, no animals, no cell phones and just quiet.

Kayla F. Carter, M.Ed., M.A. CCC-SLP

My name is Kayla Carter. I am from the lovely, rural town of Denmark, SC. I am currently entering my 10th year in education. I am currently a Speech-Language Pathologist at a primary school. I am a former teacher of Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades. My favorite is kindergarten because I love seeing these blank books become filled with knowledge! I am a 2019 graduate of South Carolina State University, where I earned my 2nd Masters in Speech Pathology and Audiology. I also earned my Bachelor’s (2013) and 1st Masters (2014) in Early Childhood Education, all from the same university. Being an SLP is a very rewarding career for me. I always knew my purpose was to help people. And it is so gratifying helping my clients reach their goals and improve their communication skills. Just knowing I am making a difference in someone’s life means the world to me!

My hobbies include going to school, reading, traveling, volunteering at my county’s emergency services center and state litter board, taking pictures, going to the movies, spending time with family and friends, tutoring the youth of my community in the areas of reading and math, and learning to cook.

Daja Riggins, M.S., CCC-SLP

Hello, My name is Daja Riggins, and I am from a small town called Aynor, SC located in the Myrtle Beach area. I received a Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology in 2020, from Francis Marion University (FMU.) I was among the FIRST cohort of students to matriculate through this newly developed SLP program! During my graduate school tenure at FMU, I served as the Treasurer of the National Student Speech- Language & Hearing Association (NSSLHA).

After receiving my Master’s degree, I moved to the Irmo area to pursue this wonderful career! I have experience with treating dysphagia (swallowing disorders) and cognitive disorders with adults. I also have experience with treating language, pragmatics (social skills,) and articulation disorders in children and teens.

The main reason I decided to become an SLP, is because I had also received speech services during my childhood years to treat fluency (stuttering) concerns. I realize how much of an impact receiving those services have had on my life. I am blessed to have acquired tools which I obtained from observing and working with my childhood speech therapist! What I love most about therapy is the progression that I see my patients make each day. It is very rewarding to see how far my patients come in such a short amount of time! Working as an SLP is such a rewarding and heartfelt career, and I cannot see myself doing anything else!
